Broderick Thomas, a senior quarterback at Madison, was granted eligibility for the upcoming season by the University Interscholastic League’s State Executive Committee.
In a ruling on Wednesday, the UIL cleared the way for the 6-foot-3, 180-pound quarterback to play this year for the Marlins after being ruled ineligible by the District 20-5A Executive Committee.
Thomas was the starting quarterback at Fort Bend Elkins as a sophomore in 2006 and as a junior midway through the 2007 season. Thomas was kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons. He then moved and transferred to Madison in December. But the District 20-5A Executive Committee ruled that Thomas was ineligible for one year because he changed schools for athletic purposes.
Because this is Thomas’ senior year, the ineligibility period would have cost him his final year to play high school football.
Thomas did participate in Madison’s spring game on May 8, and scored on two long touchdown runs in the game. Head coach Ray Seals was very impressed with Thomas and what he brings to the Marlin offense.
“Broderick is one of those kids with God-given talent,” Seals said. “He’s not a Vincent Young (a Madison graduate), but he’s not too far behind. He’s still trying to learn the system and what we’re doing here. But he’s been a great joy to work with while he’s here.”
Thomas will take his first snap for the Marlins on Aug. 29 at Reliant Stadium against Pearland in the season opener for both teams.
