Slowly but surely, the Memorial volleyball team is starting the 2008 season playing like the same team that made it to state two years ago.

Memorial looked strong in a three-game sweep Friday at Mayde Creek, defeating the Rams 25-16, 26-24, 25-12. Also looking strong was senior outside hitter Shawn Hindman, who had 18 kills and played with power over the Ram blockers.

Memorial, which was fresh off another win over Deer Park in the Katy ISD tournament, continued to look impressive and a team just about ready to contend for a regional championship.

“We came up after playing in the tournament, so we’re a little bit tired,” Mustangs coach Beth Gammill said. “I wasn’t real happy with the ball control tonight, but we made it through.”

In the first game, the Mustangs kept feeding the ball to Hindman, and she delivered. She got eight kills in that first game as Memorial jumped out to a 17-11 lead and didn’t look back.

“She’s starting to dominate,” Gammill said.

But in the second game, the Rams got tough. The Mustangs had a 13-7 lead and grew to 19-13, but a kill from Kelsey Teague and a block and an ace by Carolyn Colpoys sparked a six-point rally to tie the game at 19. It remained tied at 25 when Memorial outside hitters Alexandra Cicccio and Kirby Monson got a kill each to seal the win.

The third game was all Memorial (3-0), as Hindman picked up where she left off in the first game, getting five kills to help the Mustangs grab a 20-10 lead and hold on for the win.

“I’m just working hard and trying to get a win,” Hindman said. “We have a really athletic team and we’re starting to bring the team together and starting to mesh really well together.”

Memorial will get back into Katy ISD tournament play on Saturday, then will host Langham Creek Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mayde Creek will also be back in Katy ISD play, then will host Fort Bend Bush Tuesday.
