Throughout moments of Katy Taylor’s three-game sweep of Cypress Creek Tuesday night, it looked like the Mustangs were coming together as a formidable team that could be in the mix for not only a District 17-5A championship, but a strong run in the playoffs.

Taylor disposed of a young Cy Creek team, 25-12, 25-16 and 25-11. The victory was fueled in part by great play from the middle and capitalizing on Cougar hitting errors.

“I’m really excited about the progress we’re making,” Taylor coach Brooke Plemons said. “We’ve been struggling a bit at the beginning of the year, but we’re seeing more consistency on the court and we’re making decent progress.”

The first game saw Taylor use its middle blockers to get off to a great start. Kills by junior Amanda Patterson and sophomore Brittani Peska helped the Mustangs jump out to a 9-2 lead and to an easy 25-12 win.

Creek, led by junior middle blocker Courtney Windham, started out well in the second game, taking a 6-5 lead after trailing 4-0. But two kills by Peska and a couple of hitting errors helped Taylor to regain the lead and go on an 8-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. Two consecutive aces by Creek setter Nicole Prewit helped the Cougars pull within two, but more hitting errors and an ace by defensive specialist Alex Edwards sparked a 5-0 Taylor run and coasted to a 25-16 win.

Hitting errors and service errors also did in Cy Creek in the third game, allowing Taylor to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Peska had three kills and two blocks in the game as the Mustangs rolled to an easy 25-11 win.

“I do have some seniors that are doing a good job of leading this team. My libero, Maiya Perich, is all over the place,” Plemons said. “My setter, Kristen Fenati, is doing a good job.”

Plemons, who joined the Mustangs this season after five years coaching at Fort Bend Austin, is hoping Taylor can continue its progress into district play, which will be fierce with teams such as Katy, Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes battling for a district title.

“They have done a really good job of working with me and embracing with what I brought to Taylor,” Plemons said. “I’m excited with the potential and the opportunities that they have here at Taylor. ”
