The Kingwood Mustangs beat the Cypress Falls Eagles in five games Tuesday night in non-district volleyball action at the Kingwood Park High School gymnasium.

Kingwood posted game scores of 25-27, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14 to improve to 5-2 and drop Cy Falls to 3-3.

The Mustangs were led by junior outside hitter Emily Travis' 12 kills, two of which came in the crucial fifth game.

Mustangs coach Ashley Earhart called the win nothing more than a good preseason game between two teams trying to iron out some last minute kinks before a grueling conference grind.

“I thought it was a good preseason game between two evenly matched teams,” Earhart said. “It turned out to be a better game than I expected. I thought there were some positives and negatives made by both teams which made for a good preseason match.”

The fifth game was possibly the best game of the night. Kingwood led most of the way in the before Cy Falls battled back with gut wrenching volleys, finally scoring three straight points to tie the game at 14-14 after being down 14-11 moments earlier.

But Kingwood refused to fold under pressure scoring the final two points on a net infraction and by winning another hard fought volley to grab the win.

The Lady Eagles were led by 6-foot outside hitter Kendall Cleveland who recorded a game high 25 kills. The senior wreaked havoc on the Lady Mustangs early and often in the first game, which saw Cy Falls come from behind to pull out the win in the final moments.

In the second game, Kingwood got out of the gates fast and never looked back, cruising to a 22-14 lead.

The third game was tied at 14 apiece before Kingwood, using its obvious advantage in height at the net, won 25-21.

Cy Falls won the fourth game 21-25 behind junior right side hitter Jazmine Green, who had 16 kills.

Cy Falls takes on A&M Consolidated Thursday in the Spring Branch ISD Tournament Thursday, while Kingwood visits Clear Creek at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
