Lamar and Hightower advanced in first-round games of the Aldine ISD volleyball tournament Thursday at Nimitz High School.

The Redskins came out swinging hard and fast against MacArthur, and quickly won the first game from mainly tipping. MacArthur swung back, and won the second game, 25-23. Lamar's defense couldn't prevent MacArthur from placing the ball wherever they wanted it. The Generals' Amber Jones' abilities on the net earned them numerous points, and led them into the third set.

In the third set, Lamar's Maggie Vaughn easily scored point after point, to add distance to Lamar's lead early in the round. The Redskins won the deciding set, 15-10.

"Our leadership was our strong point," Lamar coach Alexia McWhinney said, noting both Maatra Henderson and Regan Dittman.

Later, host Nimitz played Fort Bend Hightower.

Quickly in the first game, the Cougars soared past Hightower and gained an 8-0 lead. Hightower woke up and roared back to gain the lost points. Hightower's Alex Souls led the charge at the net with some amazing blocks and tipping and the Hurricanes came back to win.

Hightower kept the momentum going in the second set, taking an early lead, but Nimitz answered with a number of unanswered aces. Hightower's Yvonne Igodan spiked throughout the game, creating a considerable lead.
Nimitz didn't go down easily and quickly responded with intense blocking and long volleys.

Hightower dramatically won the second round, and the match.

"It was a little shakey," Hightower coach Melissa Hoffmann said. "We had some missed serves and a few bad passes, but our blocking and tipping really were great."
