After moving into the consolation bracket of the Spring Branch ISD tournament Thursday, Cypress Falls got a big confidence boost Friday night when they upset previously undefeated Katy in three straight games, 29-27, 26-24, 25-16.

“This win is a big confidence booster,” Cy Falls coach Kathy Stephenson said. “I feel like we’re finally getting over that pre-season hump.”

According to Stephenson, the Eagles’ track record shows them winning the first game and then losing the second. The third game is up in the air, then it’s win or lose.

Friday night, Cy Falls won the first game and continued their drive to take the second game from the Tigers, favored by many to contend for the Region III championship.

“We’ve had our ups and downs already this season,” Stephenson said. “We’ve been toe to toe with some great teams.

“After winning tonight’s first game, I didn’t want to tell my team anything. I just wanted to let them continue doing what they were doing.”

Jazmine Green and Kendal Cleveland led the way for the Eagles with top scoring and kills.

“Green and Cleveland are our top kill leaders and they have a solid defense behind them,” said Stephenson.

Green rallied in the game 1 to tie the Tigers at 19. Green then finished the game with a kill in extra points to win by the two.

Game 2 saw back and forth scoring up to 24 points. A kill by Cy Falls’ front line put the Eagles up two games to none.

In unusual Cy Falls fashion, the Eagles jumped ahead of Katy 11-5 in game 3 and then to 14-6.

“We really cut down our unforced errors tonight,” Stephenson said. “I can really see us starting to grow in this tough district.”

With a monstrous lead all through the third game, Cy Falls won by nine points to sweep the undefeated Tigers in the non-district game.

With school starting Monday and the District 15-5A season beginning in two weeks, Stephenson feels confident that her Eagles will conted for a playoff spot.

“That’s our goal,” said Stephenson. “We just want to have a high enough seed in our district to get a playoff spot and compete in the postseason.”
