Hard work and practice makes perfect, or so we’re told.

The Westfield volleyball team did their best to live up to that saying after sweeping Lamar in the Aldine ISD tournament championship game 25-19, 25-15, Saturday afternoon at Nimitz.

“They worked hard,” Westfield coach Charvette Brown said. “They work hard in practice and it showed out on the floor (Saturday).”

It took four wins to get ribbons around their necks, beating such teams as Fort Bend Marshall, Texas City and Lamar to go undefeated.

In the final game, Westfield and Lamar battled back-and-forth to 12 points apiece in the first set. It was then that the Mustangs broke out and didn’t look back.

The Mustangs rallied to score five unanswered points, forcing Lamar to take a time out. Giving up only one point after the break, Westfield scored another rally of unanswered points, eventually winning the set.

“Our labero is pretty quick on defense,” Brown said, “which helped us out a lot. The passing and offense were able to work it too.”

In the second set, Westfield’s front row led the way to victory with blocks and kills. Andrea Taylor, Kourtni Martin, and Evon Welch kept the Lady Mustangs up by at least five points the entire game.

Welch came up with big kills to put her team up 12-5 then 14-6. She then got the ball to serve and served up two aces for a ten point lead. The Mustangs went on to defeat Lamar by ten points and get the tournament win.

“They had the teamwork,” Brown said. “We’re looking for improvement everyday. We’re looking for a clean record and a sweep of district. We’re looking forward to it.”

THIRD PLACE: Texas City d. Hightower 26-24, 25-21
Predicting themselves an early District 24-4A title contender, Texas City coach Lisa Gerky saw her girls step it up this tournament.

“There are a lot of good teams here and we were excited to be here,” Gerky said. “I really saw my girls step it up today. This is going to be our year for sure.”

The Lady Stings (12-2) haven’t made it to the playoffs in a really long time, according to Gerky, but she predicts that this year’s team is going to be the team to take them there.

“I was so impressed with the girls today,” Gerky said. “I was really, really proud of them.”

The Stingarees fought neck-and-neck with Hightower through the entire first set. Hightower scored the first four points of the game off of two aces and a kill. But Texas City came back.

The Stingarees went on a five point run to catch up and then went on another six point run to take the lead. Hightower battled back and tied at 22, then 24, Texas City took set 1, 26-24.

They had another tough second set. The set saw multiple tie scores at 4, 8, and 14 but Texas City broke away and wound up winning the set by four, taking home the third place plaque.
