DeMatha Catholic (Maryland) and Aldine (TX) were crowned the National and Texas champions at the Academy National Invitational at M.O. Campbell Coliseum Saturday night.

The competition was exceptional all week as this tournament was a must-see for any die-hard basketball fan.

DeMatha faced a tough St. Patrick (NJ) team Saturday night in a game that could have went any way until the final buzzer. In the end, the Stags defeated the Celtics 58-49.

Scoring leaders for the Stags were guards Austin Freeman (20 points), Jeff Peterson (13 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists), and Isaiah Tate (10 points, 5 rebounds).

Freeman, who has signed with Georgetown, is said to be one of the premier shooters in the country. Tate will attend George Mason in the fall.

For the Celtics, guard Corey Fisher who had 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists led the team. Forward Jeff Robinson ended the night with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

The 6-1 Fisher will continue his career next fall at Villanova while Robinson (6-6) accepted a scholarship to Memphis.

In the Texas Division, Aldine came out hitting on all cylinders and never looked back. The Mustangs took on the hometown Klein Collins team and won 65-49.

Forward Gary Johnson who had 24 points and 13 rebounds led Aldine. Guard Brandon Williams finished with 13 points and 9 assists. Big man Johnson is Austin-bound and will play for Texas next fall.
