The Stratford Spartans squared off against the Spring Woods Tigers Tuesday night at the Spartan gymnasium. Both teams started off sluggish with only 28 points scored in the first half as Stratford took a 15-13 lead going into halftime.
“Both teams were in some kind of funk that first half,” explained Spartan coach Mitch Hornsby. “Neither team could really put any points on the board.”
Halftime was a wake-up call for both teams as each stepped up the intensity in the second half. The Spartans however were able to battle their way to a 50-38 victory with a surge late in the fourth quarter. Although the offense lifted the Spartans over the Tigers, it was the intense defense that held the high scoring Tiger offense to 38 points.
“Charles Edmondson did a really great job of stepping up on defense tonight,” said Hornsby. “Antwan Hicks and Andrew Luck also brought a lot of defensive intensity to the court as well.”
Spartan William White was the game’s high point scorer with 17 points as teammate Rodney Milum dropped in 12. For the Tigers it was Cornelius Williams leading the way with 13 points and Michael Louis with 12.
Stratford has a tough district match ahead of them as they face Aldine on Friday.
“We must contain their big man Gary Johnson,” stated Hornsby. “We are really looking forward to this challenge.”
The Tigers will duke it out against MacArthur at home on Friday as district play continues in
19-5A.
