After several years of rivalry, the Spring Woods Lady Tigers defeated the Stratford Spartans Tuesday night. During the first half of the game the score remained close as each team battled for the lead. With a 16-13 lead going into half time, the Tigers stepped up their intensity on defense by starting the second half with a full court press.
“Our man defense worked well” head Tigers coach Rodriguez commented. “We looked good in the second half and sophomore Desiree Moffett helped us secure the lead with enthusiasm and good rebounds.”
Holding the Spartans to four points in the third quarter, the Tigers quickly gained a 34-17 lead. The fourth quarter was filled with fouls from both teams and the Spartans had one foul out. Despite Stratford’s attempt at a comeback, Spring Woods left with the victory and a final score of 45-22.
The leading scorer for Stratford was Libby Burgher with nine points. For Spring Woods, Captain Arielle Daron led scoring with 23 points.
This win increased the Lady Tigers’ moral as they have been defeated by the Spartans for the past several years. For Spring Woods’ senior forward Kristin Johnson, this victory reigns on a personal level as well.
Johnson is an athlete whose brother is a freshman at Stratford. The Spring Woods and Stratford separation is in her family as well as on the basketball court.
“This game was really important to me” Johnson explained. “Before the game I talked with the girls and told them that I really needed our A game tonight. We all came through and worked as team to finally beat Stratford.” Next game, Johnson said she will focus on defense and trying to shoot some threes.
After this first district win, Spring Woods will compete against MacArthur on Friday. “We know MacArthur has a lot of quickness on their team so we will focus on making solid plays” coach Rodriguez explained. “The game is at their gym, so they have an advantage, but we will come with determination.”
Spring Woods will play MacArthur Friday at 7:30pm.
