‘Flight Night’ at the Second Baptist School athletic facility Friday night was a big success for all who attended. Both the boys and girls basketball teams secured victories, and the festivities included the annual Alumni game.

At 5 p.m. the Lady Eagles played St. Johns in a nail-biter game that went down to the wire. With Second Baptist ahead going into the fourth quarter, it seemed victory would easily be in favor of the Lady Eagles.

However, the St. Johns Lady Hoopers would not go away quietly. After being down by more than 12 points, the Mavericks closed the Eagles’ lead to three with 2:26 left in the game.

In the end, Second Baptist pulled out the win 42-37. Leading the way for the Eagles was Kendall Shanklin with 22 points. Virginia Keel cashed in 14.

For St. Johns, Virginia Waldrop had 16 points and Candace Bailey added 11.

In between games the Second Baptist Alumni played an exhibition match-up for old times sake. These guys battled for two 20-minute halves and ended in a tie, 34-34.

The 8 p.m. game featured the boys basketball, Second Baptist against St. Johns. This heated match up started with the Mavericks hitting on all cylinders scoring 10 unanswered points to start the game.

Second Baptist came out in the second quarter fired up with a tenacious defense and steady offense.  As a result, the Eagles went into halftime with a six-point lead, 20-14.

The Eagles, in the end, proved to be too much and walked away with a 52-36 victory. Point guard Ryan Maag led the Eagles with 20 points. Rufus Smith, who made several critical free throws down the stretch, ended the night with 14 points.

St. Johns’ leading scorer was Robert Howard who scored 16. Jordan Thomas contributed 10.
