A game hyped as one of the Houston area’s best ended up being a one-sided contest as Eisenhower dominated Humble 49-7 Friday night in a District 19-5A showdown at Thorne Stadium.
The Eagles (3-2, 3-0) defense manhandled the Wildcats (3-2, 2-1) offense, making them struggle to find a rhythm that never came. While the Eagles made big plays by players such as linebacker Cqulin Hubert who had a fumble recovery and a interception, the Wildcats managed only two first downs in the first half.
“We played as a team,” Hubert said. “Coach (Ray Evans) told us to be focused, stay focused, put the team first and come out and finish. We just did what coach wanted us to do and we came out with a big game.”
The Eagles offense didn’t waist anytime as they marched down the field on their first possession with a six play, 61 yard drive as quarterback Kenneth Guiton threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Gregory Thomas for the 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Eagles took a 9-0 lead when a bad snap from the shotgun formation skipped to the back of the end zone for the safety with 9:24 left in the half.
On the Wildcats next possession, Hubert recovered a loose ball which put the Eagles at the 16-yard line. They needed only three plays as running back Curtis McGregor scored from a yard out to make it 16-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Eagles drove 58 yards and kicker Roni Mejia booted a 31-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 19-0 lead with 9:12 in the third quarter.
After a fumble by the Wildcats on a punt return that was recovered by Greg Timmons, the Eagles struck again on a three play, 56-yard drive. McGregor jetted for a 48-yard touchdown run and a comfortable 26-0 lead with 4:45 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats got their lone touchdown as Keith Baker connected with Allen Augustine on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles were set-up on their next scoring dive by wide receiver Jaz Reynolds, who hauled in a 40-yard reception which set-up Mejia again as he kicked a 23-yard field goal for the 29-7 Eagles lead.
In the fourth quarter after a Wildcats punt, McGregor scored his third touchdown of the night on a two-yard run to make it 35-7.
The Eagles defense would put the finishing touches on the game as defensive back Allen Veazie returned a fumble 27-yards for a touchdown and Hubert added a score on a 24-yard interception return for the final score.
“Our plan was to come out and shut them (Humble) out,” Veazie said. “A lot of people didn’t think we could overcome the two loses at the beginning of the season; we just kept our heads up and worked hard at practice.”
The Eagles defense finished the night only giving up 258 total yards with 11 first downs.
For the Eagles, Guiton was 14-for-24 with 221 yards and a touchdownand McGregor rushed 16 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns.
Baker was 11-for-16 with 142 passing yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats. Write comment
