Spring Woods battled Aldine Tuesday night at the Tiger gymnasium.  Aldine set the tempo in the first quarter, as they jumped out to an early 14-5 lead and held a 44-26 advantage at the half.   Although the Tigers were obviously struggling to get back in the game, they continued to play with heart and determination.

After intermission, Spring Woods regrouped and began playing more aggressively as a team.  The Tigers managed to outscore Aldine 16-14 in the final period.  However, despite the Tigers’ effort, the Mustangs maintained their lead in the game and won with a final score of 77-57.

Aldine’s Gary Johnson had a phenomenal outing, as he scored a game-high 42 points.

“We were single-handedly beat by Gary Johnson,” Spring Woods’ coach Michael Stokebrand said.  “We played hard, but didn’t find a way to defend him.”

Despite all of the recognition that Johnson receives for his talents, he remains unbelievably humble, as his first priority is playing as a team.

“I feel like I got my team involved,” Aldine forward Johnson explained. “We came through together for this win.  It’s hard being the leading scorer and getting the team involved.”

“I just make sure I am open, and I don’t care if I have to score zero points and get 50 rebounds as long as we win and play as a team.”

Leading scorers for Springs Woods were Michael Louis with 17 points and Cornelius Williams with 11.  Aldine’s Brandon Williams contributed 13.

Aldine will play MacArthur next, while Spring Woods is looking forward to its next district match up.

“We play Northbrook next” coach Stokebrand commented. “They don’t have a Gary Johnson, so that will help us.”
