The Memorial Mustangs traveled to Eisenhower High School on Friday night to battle it out on the courts against the Eagles. Memorial is coming off a huge win against Nimitz in which four Mustang players scored in double figures. Ike is also coming off a big win in a close game against the MacArthur Generals.
Both teams struggled to put points on the board in the first quarter. However, the Mustangs finished the period strong with a four point play from Jackson Kajander who drained a three and drew the foul for the free throw. This gave the Mustangs a 14-6 lead heading into the second period.
The Eagles were unable to gain any ground in the second period and allowed Memorial to increase their lead. The Mustangs were able to secure an 11 point lead as they went into halftime up 31-20.
At the start of the second half, both teams came out and increased the intensity, stepping up the tempo of the game. Ike drove the lane and crashed the board to work their way back into the game. The Eagles slowly chopped away at the lead and brought their team within one by the end of the third. 38-37.
The lead sea-sawed back and forth in the final period as both teams kept up the intensity. Memorial took a two-point lead with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game, but a steal by the Ike defense allowed them an easy basket to retie the game at 55.
The Eagles were in charge of their own fate as they possessed the ball with 11 seconds left in the game. Ike was unable to convert but left just enough time for Memorial to attempt one final shot.
The ball was in bounded to Will Patchell who passed it to Kajandar who drained the final shot of the game to lift the Mustangs over the Eagles with a 57-55 victory. See the Reel Action clip for highlights.
Leading scorers for the Mustangs were Jackson Kajander with 18 points and Matt Brejot with 12. Leading the way for the Eagles was Darius Goff who put in 13 as teammate E. Ellis added another 10.
