Friday was “Teacher Appreciation Night” at Katy High School for the Lady Tigers’ game against Mayde Creek. Their favorite teachers escorted players as they were honored individually.
Once the game began, the Tigers were lighting the net up as Katy defeated Mayde Creek 56-41. Tough defense was the tale of the tape in a game that was so physical shoulder pads and helmets may have been appropriate.
Katy point guard Stephanie Taylor set the tone early by putting pressure on the Lady Rams’ guards stealing the ball and turning them into transition points. This, along with great ball movement, helped the Tigers go into halftime with a 33-23 lead.
After halftime, the Tigers would not let up. The defense held strong and allowed only one third quarter point. The Rams fought back in the fourth quarter, but their push was too late.
Tiger guard Holly Hall led all scorers with 15 points. Guards Alexandria Castro and Jenny Garcia both cashed in eight points.
Guard Calandra Henderson who had 13 points led the Rams. Melanie Denson added another five.
