One of the Lamar boys basketball team’s two returning starters helped the Redskins start strong Thursday at Northbrook.

One of the Redskins’ six sophomores helped secure their 52-40 win.

Senior guard Sam Shivers scored seven of his 10 points in the first half, sophomore guard Trey Dickerson added eight of his game-high 13 in the second half, and Lamar pulled out a gritty, sometimes-sloppy victory in the first round of the Spring Branch ISD Tournament.

Forward Markell Templeton, Lamar’s other returing starter, scored most of his 10 points in the second half as Lamar established a strong inside presence.

“At halftime we told them we’d been shooting way too much from the perimeter and nothing was falling so we came out with an effort to get the ball inside to the post, hoping we double us so we could kick it out if we needed to or get layups inside,” Lamar (3-1) coach Dennis Gillespie said.

The Redskins will play Cypress Creek or Fort Bend Travis in the third of four quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Friday at Don Coleman Coliseum.

Leading 23-19 at halftime, Lamar opened the second half on an 11-3 run and finally pulled away early in the fourth when Templeton and Jarvis Craft hit back-to-back layups in transition to make it 48-35.

The Raiders (0-5) got within 48-38 on a 3-pointer by Eduardo Kneer, but that was their last field goal.

Lamar was 15-of-19 at the foul line; Dickerson was 4-for-4 in the final minute and 7-of-8 in the second half, largely because he wasn’t afraid to drive.

“We started executing a lot better and things opened up more,” Dickerson said. “I know I was more aggressive in the second half than I was in the first half. Once I started penetrating everything seemed to open up more.”

Anthony Rollings led Northbrook with nine points.

“They fought really well,” Gillespie said. “We went up against a team that was fundamentally sound. I think we got more aggressive and more physical (later in the game).”
