Klein Oak, Morton Ranch and Cinco Ranch clashed for a wrestling showdown Thursday night and the Mavericks edged the Panthers 40-39 in team points, but the Panthers rebounded to take the Cougars 53-34.

In the early matches, the Mavericks had a spectacular performance by Corey Barron, who won 6-0.

“I just went out there and tried my best,” Barron said. “I didn’t really care who (I wrestled). I just knew I had a match to win. This was very important duel for us. Klein Oak is a really good school and one of the top-ranked schools in the Houston area.”

The Mavericks also had strong performances from Taylor Towomey, who won 9-3, and Chase Ruiz who walked away with a 4-3 victory.

“I think we preformed pretty well,” Mavericks coach Mark Balser said. “I’ve been waiting for some of my kids to step it up and a couple of them did that tonight. Taylor Towomey, Corey Barron and Chase Ruiz all stepped it up and beat opponents they previously lost to.”

After being nipped by the Mavericks by one point, the Panthers took out their frustration in the later matches against the Cougars. Jay Forntner had a pin in 24 seconds to add to his pin of 45 seconds he had against the Mavericks.

“It was a team tournament so it all depends on getting the extra bonus points,” Forntner said. “So that’s what I was trying to do; to get a pin and I did. I’ve been injured so I really can’t do much shots so I just had to go upper body.”

The Panthers were also lead Travis Leiskau who had a pin in 1:04 and Austin Davis who chipped with a pin of his own in 1:17. Asaiah Dyer also had a good showing, winning his match 7-0.
