The Memorial Mustang Ladies basketball team under the direction of Coach Bill Cronin outscored the Lady Spartans 48-26 Friday night at the Memorial High School gym. With a large crowd in attendance, the game belonged to the Mustangs for all four quarters.

It was the aggressive Mustang defense that kept the Spartans in check throughout the game, but an efficient offense allowed the Mustangs to earn a 22-point victory.

Heading into halftime, the Mustangs had a 30-10 advantage. However, both teams came out a little sluggish to start the second half. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they were unable to capitalize on the slower paced play set by their opponents.

Later in the third, the momentum picked up as Memorial’s tough defense put pressure on the Spartan playmakers. The Mustang offense methodically set up plays and executed on the offense making the three’s when it counted.

In the final minute of the game, Mustang point guard Lara Lapin continued to push for points, snagging the ball down court from Stratford and taking it in for two plus pulling a foul for 1 more point.

Memorial’s Lapin finished the night with 13 points and guard Brittany Clayton put up 12.

Stratford’s Libby Burgher, who was effective at the free-throw line all night, led all scorers dropping in 18 points. Tiffany Wright added 6 points.

Both teams continue district play next week with the Lady Mustangs traveling to Spring Woods for a 7:30 match-up and Stratford will take on MacArthur.
