In a rivalry game Friday evening, the Katy Taylor Mustangs hosted the Katy Tigers in a district match up.  The Mustang fans showed up for the game as the stands were packed with blue and white enthusiasm.  Despite beginning aggressively with a full court press, the Tigers were not able to hold the Mustangs from scoring.  The first quarter ended as the Mustangs led 8-4.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs increased their lead to 22-4 as they were able to retain a fiery defense which shutout the Tigers on the board and under the net for several minutes.  Eventually, senior Michael Welch led his team and was able to pull off a successful shot which re-opened Tiger scoring.  At the end of the second half, the Mustangs continued to lead 25-13.

As the second half began, the Tigers came out strong and adjusted their offense which allowed them to take advantage of several scoring opportunities.  However, the intensity that the Mustangs displayed offensively and defensively left no room for the Tigers to have a comeback.

Throughout the game, the Mustangs remained in the lead.  With aggressive rebounding and passing Katy Taylor penetrated the Tiger defense and drove the lane.  Having few turn-overs, the Mustangs played solid in every aspect which became an obstacle that the Tigers were not able to overcome. The Mustangs came out with a win and a final score of 54-32.

The leading scorer for the Katy Tigers was senior Adrian Rivera with 12 points.  Notable Katy players also included seniors Michael Welch and Patrick Okruhlik.

Leading scorer for the game was Katy Taylor senior Corbin Ray with 21 points.  Also contributing to the Mustang’s score was senior Austin Oxener with 12 points.

The Katy Taylor Mustangs will play against Alief Taylor Tuesday night while Katy plays Alief Hastings.
