The Spring Branch ISD held its 19-5A Girls and Boys 1 Meter District Diving competition today at the W.W. Emmons Natatorium. Although the number of divers competing was small, the practices and requirements have been nonetheless demanding. District diving head coach, Ed Hooker stated that the student-athletes practice 2-4 hours during the week while the swim teams are practicing in the main part of the pool.
Diving 11 rounds with varying degrees of difficulty for each dive, these young men and women performed before a panel of three judges who decisively scored each dive. The scores were accumulated at the end of the meet to determine not only the District Champs but also who would then move on to regional competition.
Coach Hooker shared his goals for a fairly young up-and-coming group of boy divers and the strengths of his girl team led by All-American diver, Chelsea McCorvey.
The final results for the meet are as follows:
Girls Diving
1st Place- Chelsea McCorvey, Memorial with 437.15 points
2nd Place- Sarah Mokhtari, Stratford with 371.01 points
3rd Place- Claire Conroy, Memorial with 298.95 points
4th Place- Melissa Wheeler, Stratford
5th Place- Summer Troy, Spring Woods
6th Place- Ashton Cherbonnier, Memorial
Boy’s Diving
1st Place- Steven Campbell, Stratford with 228.20
2nd Place- James Gallery, Stratford with167.35
3rd Place- Jesus Tobias, Memorial with 164.50
4th Place- Teddy Aitken, Stratford
Only the top three finalists move on to regional competition, which will be held at the Fort Bend natatorium on February 2.
*Notable Chelsea McCorvey will be trying to qualify for regional and state competition for her third consecutive year.
