Several High Schools attended the 19-5A District swim meet Saturday at the W.W. Emmons Natatorium. The athletes entered the pool ready to swim their way into Regionals, competing against the best swimmers from the District.
Boys
The boys started off the competition with an exciting 200 yard Medley Relay where Stratford High School finished in first place. Following the relays individual swimmers swam in the 200 yard Freestyle where the top three finishers included Chris Valach with a time of 1:48.44, Jay Rockwel with a time of 1:58.05, and Jordan Johnson swimming it in 2:02.99.
The 200 yard Individual Medley (IM) including four different strokes; the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and the freestyle had strong finishers with John Wagner from Memorial High School winning it overall with a time of 2:03.19. The swimmers then swam in the fastest pace race of the day, the 50 yard Freestyle where out of four heats Michael Bishop from Stratford High School won it overall.
The 100 yard Butterfly saw three top competitors where Chris Deal finished first, Michael Bishop finished second, and Michael Wright finished in third place. After the Butterfly the boys swimming the 100 yard Freestyle showed their speed. John Wagner from Memorial High School finished in first with a time of 49.45.
Relays once again intrigued the crowd, cheering on their favorite schools in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. The winning team in the relay was Memorial High School. The 100 yard Backstroke saw three heats but the All-American Hunter Bayley won the race with an excellent time.
Following the backstroke the 100 yard Breaststroke began where Karson Applin finished in first, Ben Reinhardt finished in second, and Marlon Bishop finished in third place. Closing the swim meet was the much anticipated 400 yard Freestyle Relay where Stratford took first place, Memorial finished in second, and Eisenhower High School finished in third place.
Many great teams competed but the Memorial boys won overall with 205 points. Following was Nimitz and Spring Woods High School finished in third.
The coaches kept the athletes motivated throughout the entire meet.
Lois Mavish from Eisenhower High School received the Coach of Year Award.
Girls
The girls started the swim meet swimming the 200 yard Medley Relay. Memorial High School finished first, pumping up the crowd with their win for the remainder of the day. Next the 200 yard Freestyle was swum and Caroline Eustice of Stratford finished in first and Sarah Ayers also from Stratford took second place.
The girls showed off their speed in the 50 yard Freestyle where the first place finisher was Katherine MacLean from Stratford High School. The 100 yard Butterfly lifted the girls out of the water with top times of 1:00.66 from Carleigh Kutac, 1:04.06 from Cheryl Wan and 1:04.11 from Sarah Ayers. The 100 yard Freestyle included four heats where Katherine MacLean finished first and Lilly Marrow finished in second place.
A challenging event for the swimmers was the 500 yard Freestyle, but Caroline Eustice from Stratford dominated the race with a time of 5:17.06. Another relay was swam for the 200 yard Freestyle Relay where the girls received loud cheers from the crowd and Stratford High School won the race with a time of 1:42.88. Comprising the relay team were Lilly Marrow, Lauren McCleary, Katherine MacLean, and Jenny Dye.
The 100 yard Breaststroke included three heats where Catherine Wagner finished in first place with a time of 1:10.01 The final race for the girls was the 400 yard Freestyle Relay where the top three teams were Stratford with a time of 3:42.70, Memorial with a time of 3:43.72, and Spring Woods High School swimming it in 4:45.02.
Winning the overall meet for the girls was Stratford High School, with second place going to Memorial High School, and in third place was Spring Woods High School.
The coaches deserve recognition for all their hard work and the dedication they put into the sport and committment to their athletes.
Kyle Subda from Nimitz High School was recognized as the Coach of the Year.
