Alief Hastings remains the front-runner in District 18-5A win a strong 71-49 win at Katy Tuesday night. The Bears, who are now 9-1 in district play, controlled the tempo on each end of the court.
Alief Hastings coach Johnnie ‘Hawk’ Carter went into this game knowing it would be a challenge.
“I’m looking for this to be a tough game,” Carter said during pre-game warm ups.
With this attitude in mind, the Bears came in a made a statement. By the end of the first quarter, Alief Hastings jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back. The Tigers roared back, but still went into the locker room down at half 37-12.
After halftime, the Bears’ starting five saw limited action. Katy came out tough forcing a few turnovers that led to points on the offensive. But in the end, Hastings’ defense was the primary key to victory.
The Bears were led by center PJ Alawoya who had 16 points. Guard Sherman Jones added another 13 points.
Katy’s leaders were guards Adrian Rivera with 19 points and Brian Rowe with eight.
Hastings will host Katy Taylor while Katy travels to Morton Ranch Friday night. Both games have a 7 p.m. tip off.
