SUGARLAND The Region V Men and Women’s Diving Competition took place yesterday in the Don Cook Natatorium. Hosting divers from Memorial, Stratford, Spring Woods, Clements, Lamar, Cy-Falls, Langham Creek, Cy-Creek, Austin, Elkins, Jersey Village, Cy-Fair, Bellaire, and Kempner High Schools, the competition was broken down into 3 rounds.

The first round consisted of 5 dives differing in degree of difficulty and judged by five coaches from different districts.

Scores were tallied and only the top twelve divers advanced to the semi-final round where each diver performed three additional dives to be judged. Their scores continued on a cumulative basis. Again, the scores were tallied to determine the 8 divers who would move into the final round of competition.

Each athlete represented his or her school well and it was evident that hours of practice had preceded this competition. All American diver, Chelsea McCorvey, from Memorial High School, led the women’s competition throughout the morning performing dives with high degrees of difficulty. Her execution was rewarded with high marks from the judges.

Sophomore Sara Mokhtari, from Stratford High School, as well as Senior Tarah Ogzewalla from Clements performed well under pressure and finished within 2 points of each other.

The point span between the male divers was much closer as the 8 finalists headed into the last round of the meet. Finishing with over 400 points each, divers from Elkins, Cy-Fair, Austin, and Kemper focused on the details of each dive to garner points from the judges.

Only the top two divers advance to State Championships to be held in Austin at the UT Swim Center February 16 –17. After an additional round of 3 dives the finalists were named and awards were presented. Congratulations to all competitors!
