Swimming into State Finals

Swimmers made a splash Saturday at the Don Cook Natatorium for the Regional Swim Meet. Each swimmer competing for the first place finish and the chance to go to the State Finals in Austin, Texas. It was an exciting meet with some going on to represent their school and their region, and others putting a close to their season.


Girls

The girls came together in the first race of the day, the 200 yard Medley Relay, where Clements High School assured themselves a place at State winning the race with a time of 1:51.19. Next Stephanie Rovig from Langham Creek got the crowd going when she set a new meet record of 1:50.22 in the 200 yard Freestyle, she also went on to qualify in three other events giving herself a great chance in Austin to take home the gold.


The 200 yard Individual Medley (IM) including four strokes; the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle led Shelby Bottoms to the top of the podium followed by Seraphina Van and Elizabeth Gormley. The girls sped the meet up swimming the 50 yard Freestyle where Danielle Yoho from Clements finished with a time of 24.28 following her was Katherine MacLean swimming it in 24.32 seconds.


Following the 50 yard Freestyle the 100 yard Butterfly was swam and Cammile Adams from Cypress Woods finished in first swimming it in 57.37. Freestyle swimming began again with the 100 yard Freestyle where Stephanie Rovig again finished in first and Ashley Richter of Cy-Fair took second.


Next the longest race began the 500 yard Freestyle where Cammile Adams showed that she could win another race by finishing with a strong time of 4:54.58. Teams entered the pool for the 200 yard Freestyle Relay where Langham Creek finished in first, Cypress Fairbanks took second, and Lamar finished in third place.


Looking at the ceiling the girls proceeded with the 100 yard Backstroke where Fort Bend Austin's Lauren Lassiter took first place. Winding down the meet the 100 yard Breaststroke led Elizabeth Gormley to victory with a time of 1:05.36 followed by Seraphina Van and Catherine Wagner. The 400 yard Freestyle Relay ended on an exciting note for the girls of Langham Creek and the relay team consisting of Morgan Sharp, Erin Kampschmidt, Stephanie Rovig, and Kristen Young, because they broke the meet record with a time of 3:30.11 and sealed the deal for their school winning the entire meet with 111 points. Clements finished overall in second and Cy-Fair took third place.


Boys

Immediately following the girls 200 yard Medley Relay the boys began to swim theirs. Cypress Creek took first place, Stratford finished in second, and Lamar came in third place. In the 200 yard Freestyle Michael Dobsin fought to hold on to his first place barley beating John D'Oliver for the win. Records were made to be broken and Neil Caskey of Cy Falls proved that swimming a 1:51.01 in the 200 yard IM setting a new meet record.


The boys showed their speed swimming in the 50 yard Freestyle where Victor Tan took first place, Eddie Salcido came in second, and Nicholas Valby finished in third place. In the 100 yard Butterfly Neil Caskey again added another event to his State meet, finishing with a time of 50.01 beating his next competitor David Farfan who finished in second place with a time of 51.89.

Cy Creek's James Gaudet took first place in the 100 yard Freestyle with a time of 47.86 following him was Kevin Tinney of Kempner.


The 500 yard Freestyle stood no chance against the All-American Hunter Bayley who drowned the competition with a time of 4:32.82. The Cypress Creek 200 yard Freestyle Relay team made up of James Gaudet, Stephen Conrad, Justin Cotter, and Eddie Salcido had smiles on their face after breaking the old pool record time of 1:27.39 with their new time,1:27.34. Hunter Bayley of Stratford again took first place in the 100 yard Backstroke swimming a 51.43 time with his closest competitor, Jeffrey Lin taking second with a time of 54.42.


The pool saw its fastest time in the 100 yard Breaststroke where Hightower's Joshua Hammervold set a pool record of 58.22, coming in second was Eddie Salcido and in third place was Peter O'Brien. Another pool record was shattered in the last event, the 400 yard Freestyle Relay by Cypress Falls with a time of 3:11.13. The Cypress Falls team included Neil Caskey, Michael Dobsin, Brandon Booth, and Ryan Moss. The boys teams overall did a great job but Cypress Creek won the meet with 122 points followed by Cypress Falls and Stratford.
