Boys
With a tough defensive front and four players in double figures, the Cinco Ranch boys basketball team defeated cross-town rival Katy 87-45 Tuesday night. From start to finish, the Cougars ran the court well and never gave up their lead.

“We played very well defensively tonight,” Cinco Ranch coach Rick Ellis said. “We did not allow Katy to penetrate the lane and in the second half we continued to keep that going.”

Point guards Antwan Mullins and Charlton Jones, though they were not the leading scorers, kept the tempo of the game in high gear and helped orchestrate the Cougar offense.

At halftime, the Cougars held a 31-15 lead knowing they would have to continue to play at that level to ensure a victory.

“We have to continue to play well and win out,” Ellis said. “We cannot lose any games if we want a chance at postseason play.”

Obviously, this goal was in mind because Cinco Ranch dominated the first half the same as the second. Katy fought hard to battle back, but Cinco Ranch’s full and half court press seemed to keep the Tigers struggling.

The Tigers played strong around the basket with forward Michael Welch cleaning up several loose balls. But in the end, the Cougars walked away from Katy High School with the win.

Leading the way for the Cougars was Julian Simmons with 18 points. Forward Curtis Thompson cashed in another 17 points. Both players were aggressively rebounding the ball as well.

For the Tigers, guard CJ Lawson was the high man with 14 points. Guard Adrian Rivera added 10 points.

Cinco Ranch will continue 18-5A play this Friday against and play at Katy Taylor while Katy will travel to Alief to battle Elsik. Tip-off for both games is 7 p.m.

Girls
Cinco Ranch defeated Katy 54-34. Lady Cougar Stephanie Gilbreath led all scorers with 17 points. For Katy, Holly Hall and Savanna Buck each had 12 points.
