Spartans take the league championship

The Villa Park Spartans hosted El Modena Tuesday afternoon.  To begin the game, the Spartans went on a scoring rampage in which they shut out El Modena from scoring.  Up by six going into the second period, the Spartans became loose and less aggressive due to their lead in scoring.

El Modena had a difficult time shooting on offense as their shots were not strong or aggressive.  Rather, the girls seemed to lob the ball towards the goal which proved an easy shot for Spartan goalie Lacie Fisher to block.

Finally, late in the second period the Spartan defense lost its touch as El Modena’s Karla Bryant began taking strong shots which led her to score back to back goals.  At half time, the Spartans were up with an 8-2 lead.

In the second half of the game, the Spartans came out fiercely and once again caused El Modena to be shut out from the score board.  It was evident also in the third period that Fisher was back on her game after having El Modena score two goals in the second period.

“Sometimes I kind of lose focus and my hands go too deep, so I was really focusing on watching shots from out at the half” Fisher commented.

The third period ended with El Modena down by 11 goals.  In the fourth period, Madison Pinto was able to knock in a final goal for El Modena.  The Spartans came out victoriously and with the league championship.  The final score for the game left Villa Park with an 18-3 victory.

Cassie Churnside led the game with scoring six goals and having three assists and five steals.  In addition Christina Miyabe added two goals to Spartan scoring and had four assists and steals.  For El Modena, Karla Bryant scored two goals and Madison Pinto assisted with one goal.

El Modena has one last game for the season which will be at home Thursday at 4pm against Canyon High School.  Villa Park will take next week to practice for the first round of CIF after losing last year in the finals.

“I think our team is going to go pretty far in CIF” 2 meter Ally Waasted explained.  “We work really well together as team and we have all been playing together for a really long time on club.”

“It’s a really big opportunity to for us to go to finals. It’s definitely one of our goals to get back there and take the ring this year.”
