The Second Baptist girl’s soccer team clinched first place in their district with a 4-0 win over Fort Bend Baptist Thursday night. Although these teams have already tied twice during the season, Second Baptist was itching for a win over this long time rival.

When asked what was different about this game in which the Eagles dominated, Second Baptist’s Coach Brooks replied, “They wanted it. These seniors have played Fort Bend for four years now and had never beaten them so these girls were hungry.”

Rebecca Twining was the games high point scorer with two goals, of which both came in the first half. However, the Eagles did not want to settle for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Andrea Lopez dropped in another goal for the Eagles with few minutes remaining in the half giving Second a dominating 3-0 lead mid-way through the game.

The Eagles were not going to let up came out for the second half with just as much intensity as the first. Goalkeeper Gracilynn Miller has pitched five shutouts during the season, but was practically unneeded Thursday night as the Eagle defense allowed Fort Bend nowhere near the goal.

“Our defense played like nobodies business tonight,” explained Brooks. “Our sweeper, Margaret Owen, really stepped up and coordinated the defense tonight and has been the stronghold of this defense all year.”

To seal the deal for the Eagles Sarah Strange put in one final goal in the Second half.

The win propelled the Eagles to a 15-0-2 record and will give them a top seed in the playoff bracket.

The Eagles will play on Saturday 12 p.m. at Eldridge Park against a team yet undecided.
