Postseason play began this week with a bang as the Alief ISD hosted the clash of red-and-white teams at Taylor gym in bi-district play. Bellaire faced Memorial and the Lady Cardinals dominated with 50-26 win.
Bellaire coach Mike Kramer made sure his girls were prepared for postseason play by changing some of the things they do in practice.
“We knew going into the playoffs we have to take every game seriously,” Kramer said. “This week we scrimmaged the junior varsity boys. It’s the playoffs, you lose one game and you’re out.”
With this attitude in mind, the Cardinals kept the game in high gear for its entirety. Early on, Bellaire worked the full-court press forcing Memorial to work its way out of it.
Memorial guard Lara Lapin managed to maneuver her way in-and-out of the defense and set up the offense. But Bellaire turned the heat up in the second half.
The Cardinals went into halftime with an eight-point (23-15) advantage, but that was soon to change. Bellaire center Zoe Roger controlled the paint gathering several rebounds on the offensive and defensive end of the court.
Because of the tough defensive pressure, the Mustangs were held to two third quarter points. In the end, Bellaire out scored Memorial 27-11 in the second half to secure a victory.
Bellaire’s scoring leader was Roger who had 14 points. Annette Davis added 12 points. Memorial was led by Lapin with eight points. Marissa Elliott and Brittany Clayton contributed five.
The Cardinals will advance to the area round and face the winner of the Cy Fair/Katy Taylor game. The Mustangs’ season ends with a 15-16 overall record.
