The Acho family is coming off one of the biggest weeks of their lives.  Last Wednesday, Sam Acho, a 6-3, 250-lb. defensive end signed a national letter of intent to play football for the University of Texas Longhorns.  Three days later, Sam and his younger brother Emmanuel led the St. Mark’s basketball team to the Southwest Preparatory Conference championship, with a 62-58 win over Dallas Episcopal.  Sam scored a team-high 17 points in the title game, his last in a St. Mark’s uniform.

Sam’s next uniform will be burnt orange, as he suits up for Texas in the fall, but he was not always on UT’s radar; nor were the Longhorns on his.  Sam’s initial scholarship offers came from TCU, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, and SMU.  In June of 2006, he and his father decided to attend USC’s football camp in Los Angeles, where Sam impressed the Trojans’ defensive coaching staff.  A few days after the camp, Sam, Emmanuel, and their parents headed to Africa for the family’s annual medical mission trip, completely unaware of the recruiting frenzy Sam had sparked with his performance at the USC camp.

Upon returning from Nigeria, his parents’ homeland, Sam had offers from USC, Texas, Nebraska, and a host of other schools who hadn’t previously shown interest in him.  A visit to Austin to meet with the UT coaches and tour the campus convinced Acho that Texas was where he belonged.  He honored his commitment on National Signing Day and officially accepted a scholarship to play for the Longhorns.

The family received more good news on Monday, when Emmanuel became one of the first members of UT’s 2008 recruiting class.  He verbally committed to join his brother Sam as a linebacker at Texas after graduation from St. Mark’s next year.

The Athlete’s Connection congratulates Sam, Emmanuel, and the entire Acho family and wishes them the best of luck as the Acho brothers continue their football careers.

Go Acho's! At St. Mark's the Acho's have proved to be 2 of the most respectable boys on campus, or should I say men. They have been an inspiriation to me and my friends teaching us how to work together and be cool at the same time. This only serves them right to get the honor to go to such an amazing university. They have worked hard the whole time they have been at St. Marks proving excellence on the field and in the classroom.
