The Westbury Christian Wildcats have proven themselves time and time again over the last several years to be a force to be reckoned with. This year will be no different as the Wildcats blew through the TAPPS District 4-5A tournament. This includes boys and girls.

The Lady Wildcats earned first place in their district with a 75-12 victory over the Houston Christian Lady Mustangs. The Wildcats had five players in double figures to earn them the blowout victory. Leticia Cuellar was the games high point scorer with 15 points as Waltia Rolle dropped in 13. Sonja Vuong, Ijeoma Waturuocha, and Courtney Epps all landed in the double figure mark as well with 10 points a piece.

Although the Wildcats blew through their district, Westbury coach Russell Carr is not worried about not being challenged enough this season.

“We play a pretty tough pre-district schedule,” said Carr. “We have played against the toughest teams Houston has to offer.”

The Wildcats will face Corpus Christie Incarnate Word on Saturday 12 p.m. at Westbury Christian.

As for the men’s team, the win wasn’t quite so easy as Second Baptist gave them a run for their money. The Wildcats led the entire game, but the Eagles made a late surge to bring the game within eight points. Second Baptist was never quite able to cut the deficit any lower giving Westbury a 50-42 victory.

Coach Gregg Glenn and his squad are going to be well prepared for their playoff run as they had a challenging pre-district schedule and a few challenging district games as well.

“One of the blessings about our schedule is that we have seen everything by this point of the season,” explained Glenn.

Glenn gave much credit to the Eagles stating; “They did a great job and fought hard. They always play with a lot of passion.”

Leading scorers for the Wildcats were Jeff Francis with 16 points, Rye Olsen with 13, and Dwight Miller with 11. Ryan Maag was the only Eagles player in double figures with 12.

The Wildcats will play the Texas Military Institute on Saturday immediately following the girls game.
