The Cy-Fair Lady Bobcats improved to a perfect 35-0 on the season with a decisive 52-32 win over the Bellaire Cardinals Friday night.
The Bobcats took control early starting the game on a 5-0 run and quickly finding themselves up 10-3. The Bobcats quickly responded with a three pointer and a baseline jumper to narrow the seven-point deficit. However, Cy-Fair gained back control of the game and earned a 10 point lead at the end of the first period. 18-8.
In the second quarter, both teams stepped up the intensity on offense and defense. With emotions running high, Cy-Fair and Bellaire found themselves fouling a little too much. Towards the end of the quarter, both teams found themselves in the bonus earning trips to the line to shoot one and one. In the final seconds of the first half, Bellaire’s Tamara Torru drove hard to the lane and drew the foul to earn her two free throws. She made one of two to cut the deficit to 11 heading into halftime. 31-20.
Cy-Fair’s Carli Bakondy had 11 points in the first half to help give the Bobcats a sizeable lead at halftime.
The third quarter was all defense as the Bobcats were held to eight points and the Cardinals to five to give Cy-Fair a 39-25 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter brought on extreme physical play by both teams. Girls were diving, falling, and fighting for every loose ball. Although many fans felt the physical play had escalated too far, it was just the competitiveness nature and the desire to win that brought on the tussles.
“I wasn’t worried about it getting out of hand,” explained Cy-Fair’s coach Ann Roubique. “At this point, both teams just really want to win and it was just good competition.”
The Bobcats will face Eisenhower next weekend in the regional quarterfinals next weekend. Ike knocked off Elsik 45-42 on Friday night.
