Wednesday night at the Campbell Center the Westside lady Wolves and Cinco Ranches lady Cougars gave the fans an exciting Regional Quarterfinal game. The first quarter both teams were evenly matched with an ending score of 13-13 but starting the second quarter Westside started to pull away going into the half with Westside leading 28-23. Starting the second half Cinco Ranch came out of the locker room ready to play. Cinco Ranch's coach, Coach Bartlett began to continuously replace his girls keeping them fresh for when they hit the court. This strategy proved to work because going into the fourth quarter Cinco Ranch had made up some ground and started going for the win. The fourth quarter came down to the wire with an easy layup and a free throw by Cinco Ranch and a steal and a basket by Westside brought the score to 47-47 at the buzzer. This brought the Regional Semifinals closer for both teams but they now had to play another four minutes of basketball in overtime. Overtime started off with Westside getting the tip off and the first two baskets. Cinco Ranch responded by going hard to the basket and drawing fouls making the score 51-48, Westside leading. Westside having the lead slowed down the game trying to run down the clock. The Cougars had a hard time committing a foul which cost them valuable time, that they would soon learn could have been the turning point for them. After more free throws were shot by each team it brought the score closer together with Westside holding the lead of 53-50. Westside seem to have the game won but tempers erupted and a technical foul was called on the Wolves with only 10 seconds left on the clock. This opened the door for Cinco Ranch to make the free throws and get the ball back. Cinco Ranch made one and missed one, now taking the ball from half court they tried one last time for the win but they could not convert and the final score was 53-51. Westside will now move on to Regional Semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Campbell Center playing Dobie who beat Alvin, 47-28. For the Wolves Sydney Colson had 29 points and Ausha Hartley added 8 points to the board. Cinco Ranch's Briana Gilbreath and Paige Prehoda both had double figures with 13 points and Stefanie Gilbreath and Brittny Provost both were top scorers as well.
