The Memorial Mustangs and the Madison Marlins played a rematch of the first round of the 06 football playoffs, except this time they duked it out on the court. The Marlins were looking for redemption and they got just that with a 74-54 victory over the Mustangs.
The first half stayed close, but the Marlins were in control. The Mustangs did a good job not allowing Madison to run away with it, but the Marlins took a small lead going into half time.
Madison came out the second half fired up and ready to go. The dominated the Mustangs defensively the first half of the quarter. The Mustangs were held scoreless for nearly four minutes into the second half. Memorial’s Jackson Kajander ended the scoring drought for the Mustangs with a mid-ranged jumper to drop in two of his 11 points.
Kajander’s bucket had little effect on the Mustang offense who struggled the remainder of the game. The Marlins took a 57-44 lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back. Madison went on to win 74-55 to advance to the area playoffs where they will face a formidable Katy Taylor.
Madison coach Craig Maura has his team playing some good basketball but has a good challenge ahead of him with the Taylor Mustangs.
“We do have some things to improve on,” explained Maura. “We are going to go work on some different drills and shooting.”
Leading scorers for the Marlins were Tommy Mason-Griffin who dropped in a game high 27 points and Richard Brown who banged in another 20. Leading the way for the Mustangs were Will Patchell with 19 and Matt Brjot with 14.
