For anyone who attended the Cy Springs (27-8) against Katy Taylor (24-13) bi-district game Wednesday night, they more than likely witnessed a three-point shootout. With Taylor’s Corbin Ray and Cy Springs’ Phillip McDonald on the court, the three balls were sure to fly.
Though both of these players were in double figures, Ray and the Mustang squad pulled out a 70-61 victory at the Berry Center.
Taylor’s Taylor Featherton ran the point guard and kept the pressure on the Panther players by penetrating the lane. This, along with solid picks set by his teammates, freed up Ray to knock down 16 first-half points.
The Mustangs led by nine (36-27) at halftime, but knew the job was not finished yet. By observation, that was the attitude the Mustangs had as they came out in the third quarter and played just as hard as they did in the first half.
Leading by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter, Taylor controlled the tempo in this game. Though Cy Springs had several players in double figures, it was not enough to slow down the Mustangs in the opening round of the playoffs.
Ray led Taylor’s scoring force with 32 points and Luke Caldarera had 12 points.
For Cy Springs, Eddie Thompson scored 20 points while McDonald had 14.
