The Cypress-Fairbanks Berry Center was the hot spot Wednesday night for the Cy Falls and Morton Ranch bi-district match up. Though the game stayed close for all four quarters, the Golden Eagles came out on top 79-70.
This game previewed the battle of point guards who wore No. 3, Cy Falls’ Devin Gibson and Morton Ranch’s Dowell Kendrick. Gibson, who was the game’s leading scorer, ran the Golden Eagles’ offense like a machine and dribbled his way in-and-out of traffic.
Kendrick worked the ball around to ensure his Maverick teammates would get the open looks to convert to points. At the half, Cy Falls held 39-34 lead.
The start of the second quarter was high-powered with both teams trading buckets on their side of the court. But towards the end of the third, Cy Falls began pulling away after capitalizing on some Morton Ranch’s turnovers.
After Morton Ranch’s Kevin Foster nailed a three-pointer and drew the foul, the fire was lit and the Maverick team started to run. Their defense held on several possessions and before long a double-digit lead was now cut to six.
That momentum carried into the fourth quarter, but the Cy Falls would not go away that easily. As the Maverick defense went into a full-court press, the Golden Eagles worked their way out of it and converted several transition baskets.
Towards the end of the fourth, Cy Falls extended the lead to 12 and that was all she wrote.
Leading the way for Cy Falls was Gibson with 28 points. Josh Phillips added 20 points while Josh Struble had 13.
For Morton Ranch, Foster led with 25 points. Brandon Montgomery (15 points) and Adam Johnson (11 points) were the other high scorers respectively.
Cy Falls will advance to the area playoffs to play Bellaire. Tune into The Athlete’s Connection for date and time.
