The Stratford Spartans are ranked fifth in the state in Division II of men’s lacrosse. On Wednesday afternoon they would be faced with a rivalry game against their cross-town rival the Memorial Mustangs.

The Spartans started off strong, as Walker Colt put in a goal in the first two minutes for Stratford. From there the Spartans continued to stay in control keeping the ball on their half of the field. Stratford earned a 3-0 lead heading into halftime with Walker Colt putting in his second goal of the game and Trevor Davis adding one of his own.

The Mustangs started to make a push in the second half with goals by Robert Sauermann, Mason Hebert, and Louis Tronzo, but the Spartans were able to drop in a few more themselves to secure the 6-3 victory. Coming through for the Spartans in the second half was Drew Crawford, Trevor Davis, and Nathan Wegscheid who all put a goal on the board for Stratford.

Davis, who scored two goals in the victory over Memorial, is a freshman and has been a great addition to the Spartan lineup.

“He’s only a freshman and he scores a lot,” said Stratford coach Matt Carr. “We expect big things from him this year.”

The Spartans will also look to their two-time all state goalie, Grant Williams, to be a big time playmaker this season. Williams is a senior and is being heavily recruited by Division I lacrosse teams at the college level.

The Spartans will face some stiff competition this Saturday as they prepare to take on Cy-Fair at the Westchester playing fields. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
