Cy Fair went into Friday’s match up against San Antonio Churchill in the state semifinals at the Erwin Center in Austin knowing how tough it was to get there. After coming so close in their 2006 campaign, the Lady Bobcats came out and made a statement in 2007 with a demanding 77-46 victory.

From start to finish, this game was all about Cy Fair. With a tough full court defense and strong play in the paint, the Bobcats set the tone early and never trailed the entire game.

Bobcat forward Nneka Ogwumike controlled the glass and scored several of Cy Fair’s first points. But before the second quarter came to a close, N. Ogwumike picked up three fouls and sat out the rest of the half.

When Cy fair’s leading scorer (Ogwumike ) was off the court because of foul trouble, the Bobcat team turned up the heat and maintained a strong defensive effort which led to a 39-16 lead at halftime.

But Churchill would not let up. After half, the Lady Chargers went into a full-court press to try and generate turnovers. They were successful in converting a few turnovers into points, but Cy Fair continued matching bucket for bucket.

As the Bobcat lead steadily increased, Cy Fair coach Ann Roubique began rotating her bench players to the court. Before the final buzzer sounded, all the girls on the roster saw the court.

Cy Fair’s leading scorers was Chiney Ogwumike who had 23 points. Her sister, N. Ogwumike had 15 points. Nicole Morris and Meghan Daniel both scored 12.

For the Chargers, Sammy Katz scored 12 points while Christine Flores and Katherine Frost contributed 11.

The Bobcats will advance to the state finals and face undefeated Rockwall (39-0). The game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Churchill ended the season with a 38-3 overall record.
