The Madison Marlins faced off against the Kingwood Mustangs Friday night at the Campbell Center. Kingwood made a statement in the beginning of the game by putting the first couple points on the board. Not to be outdone, Madison turned up the heat and began to match the Mustang's shots. The first quarter ended on three free throws scored by Tommy Mason-Griffin of Madison who brought his team within one point ending the quarter 19-18, Kingwood.
The second quarter was full of referee calls. With the crowd yelling, “let the boys play” the refs made sure it would be a fair game. Both teams were evenly matched and once again Madison received the chance to end the quarter with free throws, which had them down by one with a score of 34-33 going into the second half.
Kingwood went into the second half with Regional Finals on their minds. They began to pull away from Madison extending their lead with every possession. The Marlins were not giving up though, as their full court press created steals and allowed them to add points to the board. They tried to stay close but having to foul to slow the Mustangs down did not give them a chance to catch up. Kingwood came out victorious with a final score of
82-66.
Two seniors from Kingwood added 42 points for their team. Mike Singletary had 22 points and Trevin Harris had 20 points. Also Kingwood senior Trumaine Johnson had 10 points. For the Mustangs Tommy Mason-Griffin had 17 points, Richard Brown followed him with 14 points, and senior Cedric Hall had 12 points.
The Mustangs will play the Clear Lake Falcons Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the Campbell Center for Regional Finals.
