Early Saturday evening the Kingwood Mustangs and the Clear Lake Falcons took to the court at the Campbell center to see who would represent Region III in the Championship tournament in Austin.

Both teams started off in an offensive funk that kept the score low for the first several minutes of the game. It took Kingwood over three minutes to knock down their first field goal of the game. As time went by each team started to find their offensive rhythm and put points on the board. Clear Lake took a three-point lead with a buzzer beater to end the first period. 17-14.

Each team had more trouble offensively in the second half missing open shots, however, Kingwood and Clear Lake both took advantage of second chance points coming off offensive rebounds. Clear Lake’s Kendrell Thompson seemed to be the only one who was hot from behind the arc knocking down four shots from behind the arc in the first half. Although Thompson was hot, it was Kingwood who started to execute their offense and earned a 31-24 lead heading into halftime.

The Falcons regrouped at half and controlled the tempo of the third quarter. Clear Lake’s Armie Lewis drained three shots from downtown to bring the Falcons right back in it. The Falcon defense held the Mustangs to 11 points in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to one point by the end of the period.

As the game was up for grabs heading into the final quarter, fans, students, and parents were loud and on their feet. The game remained close through most of the fourth period, but with four and a half minutes remaining Kingwood’s Trevon Harris swung the momentum in favor of the Mustangs knocking down a three point shot to give Kingwood a six-point lead.

As it became desperation time for the Falcons, they had no choice but to start fouling to stop the clock. Although there had been very few trips to the line by either team, Kingwood came through and knocked down some crucial shots from the charity line.

The Mustangs sealed a 59-51 victory over the Falcons to advance to the final four-championship tournament in Austin next weekend.

Mike Singletary lead the way for the Mustangs dropping in 25 points as teammate Trevon Harris added 21. Leading the way for the Falcons was Kendrell Thompson with 19 and Armie Lewis with 12.
