Humble, TX – When a high school athlete receives guidance and instruction from professionals, there is a greater chance that an athlete will be successful in their chosen sport.

Texas City golfer Caleb Jones, and Sugarland Clements golfer Andrew Delgado, decided early in their careers that hiring a golf professional would be beneficial to their athletic development.

“My teacher (PGA's Mike Stanley) really helps my game in all aspects,” Jones said. “He prepares me mentally and has been a major attribute to my development.”

Jones used to participate in both basketball and baseball. He is now a full-time golf player and explained why he decided to make an athletic transition.

“I really just got tired of playing the other sports,” he said. “I realized my chance of earning a scholarship at these other sports was a long shot. I feel my chances are greater with golf.”

Jones has only been playing golf for the past 2 ½ years and is confident about earning a scholarship.

“It doesn't even matter what school, I just want to go where there is interest,” Jones said. “I prefer Division I, but I know I will have to win a few more tournaments and I hope to go to state.”

Delgado also takes advantage of using professional assistance. His trainer's name is Jim Murphy.

“I have been working with him (Murphy) for two years,” Delgado said. “I practice everyday and he works with me on my entire game including putting and wedges. I used to shoot 100s and now I shoot low 70s”

As a former football athlete, Delgado decided to leave the gridiron and pick up a 9-iron.

“ I used to play football, but my heart is into golf,” he said. “I have played competitively for three years.”

Delgado, a 2008 graduate, is looking to participate in golf at the collegiate level.
