Humble, TX – When Katy High School golfer Elizabeth Calderon began middle school, she had no intentions of ever playing golf. It's amazing how things change, seeing that her ambition began out of pure boredom.

“When I was in eighth grade, my friend and I got bored so we decided to try out for the golf team,” Calderon explained. “By the next year, I quit basketball and just played golf.”

And now it's all history. Since her sophomore year, she has been a member of the Katy Lady Tigers golf team and the HGA Junior Golf Program.

Calderon practices golf all year. This year alone she has played in more than 10 tournaments and has been quite successful at many of them.

At the HGA Junior Golf Tournament at Redstone, Calderon explained how golfer's qualify for select tournaments.

“HGA allows you to choose from a number of tournaments,” she said. “Once you pick the tournaments, you are rated on a point system. The more points you have the better tournaments you may compete in.”

And she is definitely looking to compete in the best tournaments. One of Calderon's goals is to play golf in college. As she enters her senior year, she has already started an integral aspect of the recruiting process.

“I have already begun contacting TCU, Texas A&M Corpus-Christi, and UTSA,” she said.

Calderon compiled 30 points this summer and was ranked 27th amongst Houston-area HGA 16-18 year-old Junior golfers. She was also honored this month as GolfTEC's Houston Student of the Month.

This summer Calderon has been shooting mid-to-low 80s, which is a personal best for her.
