The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches released its 2007 boys and girls all-state teams.  Sixteen local players earned spots on the lists.

The Class 4A boys all-state team included senior Mark Politte of Washington High School.  Class 5A players named to the all-state squad were seniors Mike Singletary of Kingwood, Gary Johnson of Aldine, Jai Lucas of Bellaire, B.J. Holmes of Alief Hastings, Alonzo Edwards of Klein Forest, Nathan Walkup of Deer Park, and Kendrell Thompson of Clear Lake, as well as junior Demetri Goodson of Klein Collins.

Many of these young men will face each other in the Big XII next season.  Singletary has committed to play for Bob Knight at Texas Tech.  Johnson will play under Rick Barnes at Texas.  Holmes and Walkup will be teammates at Texas A&M, and Edwards is headed to Nebraska to play for the Cornhuskers.  Lucas, a McDonald's All-American, may join his fellow honorees in the Big XII next year, as he is entertaining offers from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, as well as Kentucky from the SEC, Maryland from the ACC, and Iowa and Indiana from the Big Ten.

Seven young women from the Houston area were named to the girls all-state teams.   Jamie Simmons of Jones High School made the Class 4A squad.  Class 5A honorees were seniors Sydney Colson of Westside, Stefanie Gilbreath of Cinco Ranch, who will play for USC next season, Karima Christmas of Dobie, and Brittney Hudson of Fort Bend Austin, along with junior Nneka Ogwumike and freshman Chiney Ogwumike, both of Cy-Fair.

The Athlete’s Connection congratulates these outstanding individuals on a great season.
