Los Alamitos, CA – Servite water polo, the 2005-2006 CIF Division II
Champions, played a fierce game against Los Alamitos this evening.
Beginning the game with a 5 on 6 defensive strategy, Servite appeared
confident in a victory as the score at half time was 5-1.
Servite senior driver and 2 meter guard Aaron Meyer describes how the game began to drastically change in the second half.
“Basically, our 5 on 6 defense didn’t hold in the long run,” Meyer
said. “So the gap slowly began to get closer, and came down to a one
point difference.”
In the fourth quarter the Servite goalie received a twenty-second
penalty that left Los Alamitos in an ideal scoring position. The crowd
was on their feet in the second half as Los Alamitos scored six goals
in what might have been a remarkable comeback. However, Servite held
onto their lead for the entirety of the game. The final score was 8-7.
On offense, Cruz Smithson led Servite with 4 goals for the game, and
the defense was assisted with 9 goalie saves. Coach Sprague (CIF Coach
of the year) in his 17th season with Servite plans on continuing to
develop his athletes into one of the finest water polo teams in the
nation.
