St. Thomas’ rugby team faced off against Westside Thursday night on a mission to inch their way closer to the No. 1 ranking in the state of Texas. The Eagles squad currently holds second behind a tough Austin RFC team.

Westside battled hard and fought for the necessary inches, but the Eagles’ second half surge propelled them to a 37-21 victory over the Wolves.

Hard play and penalties were the common denominators in this match up. St. Thomas was +2 and won the scrum advantage. The lineouts were even across the board.

The game stayed fairly close in the first 40 minutes, and each team assembled at halftime to regroup. The Eagles had a 15-14 advantage.

But the minimal St. Thomas lead would not last long. The Eagles scored on a quick try to open the second half. In the end, St. Thomas would hold the Wolves to one try and one conversion for the entire second half.

Scoring for the Eagles team was Patrick Simmons who contributed three tries. One of Simmons’ tries was made possible by a big play by Andres Diaz.

Coner Mills scored on a drop kick from 20-meters out and had two conversions. Chris Ferrante, Roberto Laposse, and Michael Romero each had a try. Romero’s try sprung off of a play by Mills who worked the ball to the strong side.

For Westside, Hunter Eaton ended the game with a try and three conversions. Rafic Elahmad and Erik Czirr each had a try.
