Waltrip and St. Pius High School softball fans loaded the stands to watch two Oaks Dads Club products square off in a neighborhood pitchers duel Wednesday night when the two rivals faced each other in a non-district contest at St. Pius’ softball field.

St. Pius won on the strength of senior Karla Rodriguez’ 14-strike out performance, riding a five-run second inning to take the second and final game of the series between the two teams, 5-1.  Waltrip won the teams’ first meeting, 3-2, on Feb. 28.

Many of the girls on the two teams have played with and against each other since they were five and six years old in neighborhood ball clubs like Oaks Dads, including Rodriguez’s mound opponent Abby Schumacher, who took the loss.  Schumacher countered Rodriguez’ stellar performance with five shut out innings of her own, allowing the Panthers just one hit after their second inning outburst and four hits overall.

A double to center by the Panthers’ Samantha Wursteinsen and several miscues by Waltrip’s defense accounted for all of St. Pius’s scoring in the bottom of the second.  All of St. Pius’ runs were unearned.

Waltrip’s sole score came in the sixth when, with two outs, designated hitter Anne Marie Taylor reached first on a slow roller and a single by third baseman Alison Heidbreder chased her home.

Rodriguez allowed only three hits for the win, which gives the Panthers the bragging rights in the neighborhood.
