Mayde Creek High School hosted the Area-District game between the Cinco Ranch Cougars and the Westside Wolves Friday night. The Cougars entered this game with a 13-1-0 district record and the Wolves held a 13-3-1 record.

From the first minutes of the game Cinco Ranch controlled the ball and the tempo of the game. They consistently kept the ball firing at Westsides’ goalie, Eryn Martinez. Martinez did a great job rejecting the attempts but with 22 minutes on the clock Cinco Ranch had an easy assist for Amy Brodeur to score the first goal. Again Brodeur got the ball with 12 minutes on the clock and scored from the top of the penalty box to give her team a 2-0 lead.

As the clock ran down the Cougars remained inside the goal, keeping all the action inches away from the net and with 9 minutes Holly Schnitzler got another ball past the goalie for Cinco Ranch’s third goal. Martinez was slow to get up after getting injured on the Cougars third attempt, she left the game but returned minutes later to close the first period. Before going into halftime Brodeur performed a hat-trick with 2:44 on the clock by finding the back of the net for her third goal and the lead of 4-0.

After pep talks from both coaches the second period began in much the same way. With only 2 minutes into the game Cinco Ranch’s Sydney Smith scored followed by Riley Canfield five minutes later giving her team their sixth goal. Westside did not give up, they fought through and began pressing the ball down the field. Spencer Laufer from Westside broke away from defenders and got a shot off that barely missed by bouncing off the top of the goal post.

After Cinco Ranch switched goalies taking out the starting senior Abby Stricklnad with Megan Bereznay the Cougars found their way toward the Westside goal again. Cinco’s Melanie Clancy hit a header into the goal giving the Cougars their seventh goal and the teams’ 100th goal of the season. With five minutes on the clock Christy Cotgrove from Cinco sealed the win with a final score of 8-0.

Cinco Ranch’s Head Coach, Coach Pettibone said, “We started out slow but once one fell I knew the rest would fall. I couldn’t be happier and everybody stepped up in this game.”

Cinco Ranch will go on to play in the Regional Quarterfinals against Cypress Creek who beat Bellaire Friday night with a 1-0 victory.
