Even though the weather may have been bad for the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic Track Meet at Rice University, it did not stop many of Texas’ most talented high school and college track athletes.

One of the runners present was Angleton’s DJ Monroe. Monroe, who has verbally committed to play football for the University of Texas, owns one of the state’s fastest times this year (10.34).

Monroe’s personal best time in the 100-meters is a 10.31. He is also the defending 100-meter champion. His plans are to return to Austin for more than one occasion.

“I am really looking forward to Texas Relays and State,” Monroe said.

At Rice Saturday, Monroe won the 100-meter with a time of 10.50 and anchored Angleton’s gold-finishing 4x100 meter relay. The team time was 41.66.

The Angleton speedster looks forward to defending his crown this track season and explained to The Athlete’s Connection what he plans to do in preparation.

“I plan to pull tires, lift weights, and drink lots of water,” Monroe said. “It’s just that simple.”
