The Memorial Mustangs improved their district record to 7-0 Monday night with a decisive 15-5 victory over the Spring Woods Tigers.
The Mustangs struggled early on defense giving up four runs in the first inning. Winning pitcher Larry O’Donnell was brought in early to pitch relief after the Tigers started early with the hot bats. O’Donnell was able to close out the first inning to keep the Mustangs from getting deep in the hole.
The Memorial offense brought it back in the bottom of the first with consistency at the plate. The Mustangs took advantage of singles, walks, hit batsman, and Tiger errors to work their way back from the deficit and tie the game at four.
Neither team was able to put up runs in the second inning; however, this would not be a problem for the Mustangs in the third. Memorial scored seven runs in the third lead by Cliff Vaughn who hit a stand-up double with the bases juiced. Vaughn drove in three runs in the inning and had 5 RBI’s on the night.
The Mustangs had an 11-5 lead after the big seven run inning and would not stop there. Memorial put up three runs in the fourth and closed out the game in the sixth with a walk-off beaned batsman to give the Mustangs a 15-5 victory.
Cliff Vaughn ended the game 2-3 with a homerun, a double, and five RBI’s. Jeremy Rathjen went 4-5 on the evening with four singles as teammate Mark Hicks went 3-5 with three singles.
Sammy Bissett suffered the loss for the Tigers but fought a tough game.
District 19-5A has shaken up with the Spartans falling to Nimitz Monday night to give Nimitz, Spring Woods, and Stratford a tie for second place. However, things could change Tuesday when the Mustangs head out to Lansford Field to play the Nimtz Cougars. The Spartans will play host to Ike on Tuesday and will need a victory to keep up with the pack.
