Tuesday night, the Stratford Spartans took on the Eisenhower Eagles at Stratford High School. The Eagles entered the game with a 1-6-0 record, and the Spartans came in with a 5-2-0 District record.

Stratford struck early, with two base hits to the outfield that scored two runs, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead going into the next frame. The second inning was a combination of batters getting hit by the ball, walks, and great hits for the Spartans. Eisenhower’s pitcher, Steve Spillars could not find his rhythm and struggled finding the strike zone, giving Stratford five more runs in the second inning.

With a 7-0 lead, Stratford carried their momentum over to the third. The Spartans' Barret Loux hit one out of the park, and Stratford kept the hits going, making their way around the bases and ending the third inning with a score of 10-0.

Eisenhower had better hitting in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Garza made it to second base, but the Spartans great fielding would not allow any Eagles to make it home. Spillars found his touch in this inning, striking out batters and giving his defense a chance to make the plays to hold the Spartans to 10 runs.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles had one last chance to catch up, but Stratford held them to zero runs and ended the game on the run rule in the fifth, with a final score of 10-0.

Stratford head coach Anthony Mardirosian said, “We played really well.  We lost our two previous games, but we bounced back really well. Our pitcher, Zach Boulanger did a good job, and all of his pitches landed in the strike zone.”

Boulanger had 7 strike outs and no walks, Jake Miller was 1-2 with 2 RBI’s, A.J. Daggett was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s, John Sorsby was 1-2, Travis Smith was 1-2, Kevin Hahn was 1-1 with an RBI, and Barret Loux was 1-2 with 2 RBI”s and a homerun.

On April 5th, the Eagles will play the Spring Woods Tigers at home, and the Eagles will take on MacArthur on the road.

The big story was...
written by m, April 04, 2007
Zach Boulanger got his first varsity district start after missing last season to injury and along with Stratford's defense behind him pitched a great 1-hit shutout needing only 57 pitches (13 balls/ 44 strikes). No Eagle runner was allowed to reach base until the top of 4th inning. Boulanger faced only three batters over the minimum 2 of which reached in fifth inning on 2 errors when the entire infield was substituted. Boulanger would get all three outs in the fifth with 2 K's and the last out came when Eagle runner tried to steal home on pass ball and Boulanger was there waiting for him securing the shutout.
