The Memorial Mustangs jumped to 8-0 in district play Tuesday night with a decisive 7-1 victory over the Nimitz Cougars. The Cougars are coming off a big win over Stratford and looked to stir things up in district 19-5A. However, Memorial pitcher Daniel Clark would be a tough roadblock for the Cougars to surpass. Clark gave up one run in six innings of play. “I just treated it like any other game,” explained Clark. “I knew I had to play big and I came out and found my pitches tonight.” Although Clark pitched a good game, the Mustangs offense gave him plenty of backup. They started the game with a two-run first inning ignited by Michael Ratterree who hit a single to center field to drive in Mark Hicks and Kevin Ahrens. Both defenses stepped up big in the next three innings giving up zero runs. However, Memorial found their horsepower in the fifth and put up another two runs. With the bases juiced, Ratterree stepped up big again and hit a single to right and drove in Hicks. Memorial’s M.P. Pokinos was next in line after Ratterree and he hit a single to left to give the Mustangs a 4-0 advantage. The Nimitz pitcher did a good job of getting out of the inning striking out the next three batters he faced. The Mustangs increased their lead in the sixth with a two-run blast by Kevin Ahrens. The Cougars would not be able to recover in this outing as Ahrens came out to pitch relief in the final inning. Ratterree finished the game 2-3 at the plate with three RBI’s and Clark had eight strikeouts on the mound. “We just have to keep our team chemistry going and stay loose,” said Clark Memorial will host Aldine on Thursday in their next district match up and Nimitz will travel to Northbrook to take on the Raiders on Thursday as well.
